Young Adults – Responsibilities & Advice

So, you’re a grown-up now!
Hold it!  There’s stuff you gotta know…

Embarking on the journey into adulthood is a thrilling expedition filled with new freedoms and opportunities. Yet, it also brings in a bunch of legal responsibilities that, if not navigated wisely, can turn into pitfalls.

Understanding these responsibilities is crucial to turn you into a responsible member of society. Let’s break down some key legal obligations that come with adulthood and offer advice on how to approach them.

1. Financial Responsibilities

As you step into adulthood, managing your finances becomes a significant legal responsibility. This includes filing taxes, managing credit cards, and understanding loans.

Advice: Start by familiarizing yourself with basic financial literacy. Learning how to budget, the importance of saving, and the basics of taxes can set a solid foundation. Consider using financial management apps or attending workshops. Also, be cautious with credit cards; understand the terms and interest rates to avoid debt traps.

WARNING:  No interest for twelve months!  Sounds great.  Here’s what they don’t tell you except in fine print buried in that long legal document you were given with your shiny new card.

If you don’t pay the entire amount due in 12 months, they will go back to the FIRST MONTH and calculate the very high interest rate.  Then that amount gets added to your balance which will increase your monthly payment.  I can’t do the math for you because every situation will be different, but it will amount to a lot of money you may not have.

2. Employment Laws

Understanding your rights and responsibilities in the workforce is another crucial aspect. This includes knowing about minimum wage laws, workplace safety, discrimination, and harassment policies.

Advice: Always read your employment contract thoroughly before signing. If you’re unsure about any terms, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. Familiarize yourself with the labor laws in your country or state. If something at work doesn’t feel right, reach out to a mentor or seek legal advice.

3. Housing and Tenancy Obligations

Whether you’re renting a place or planning to buy, understanding housing laws and your rights as a tenant or homeowner is essential.

Advice: Before signing a lease or purchasing a home, make sure to read all the documents carefully. Know your rights regarding security deposits, eviction notices, and property maintenance. It’s also wise to have a basic understanding of real estate laws if you’re planning to buy property.

4. Civic Duties

Voting, serving on a jury, and abiding by the law are civic responsibilities that come with adulthood.

Advice: Register to vote and participate in elections to have your voice heard. If called for jury duty, take it seriously as it’s a fundamental part of the judicial system. Always strive to be a law-abiding citizen, understanding that actions like underage drinking, drug use, or other illegal activities have real consequences.

5. Healthcare

With adulthood comes the responsibility of managing your own health care, including understanding health insurance policies and making informed decisions about medical treatments.

Advice: Learn about different health insurance plans and choose one that fits your needs. Keep up with routine medical check-ups and be proactive about your health. Transitioning into adulthood is as much about enjoying new freedoms as it is about taking on new responsibilities. By educating yourself on these legal aspects and seeking advice when needed, you can navigate this exciting phase of life with confidence and responsibility.

Remember, it’s okay to ask for help (no such thing as a stupid question) or seek professional advice when dealing with any legal matters. The road to adulthood is a learning journey, one that is easier navigated with a bit of preparation and a lot of wisdom.  Just an FYI-you will make mistakes-that’s where you get the wisdom.
